Crew is a social mobile application, and my role there is broad by design: I build and maintain the app end-to-end, from React Native screens to the Node.js services behind them. It’s less a list of tasks than ownership of a product surface.
Problem & context
Social products live or die on feel—latency, reliability, and how quickly the product responds to what its community wants. A small remote team meant each engineer had to own features across the full stack, not hand work between silos.
My role
I own features end-to-end: shaping them with product and design stakeholders, building the React Native UI, implementing the Node.js backend work they need—including location, media, and social functionality—and carrying them through review, testing, and release.
Engineering approach
Two things I pushed hard on: test coverage and review discipline. Comprehensive tests and structured code reviews measurably reduced production bugs and made a fast release cadence sustainable. I also led two-week sprints in Jira, and the team consistently delivered features ahead of schedule.
Mentorship
I mentored a junior developer through hands-on training and feedback until they were a fully independent, productive member of the remote team—ahead of schedule. Growing another engineer is the most durable contribution I’ve made to the codebase.
Outcome & impact
Reliable performance, fast feature turnaround, fewer production bugs, and a stronger team. The product ships on a steady rhythm, and features move from idea to release without leaving the hands of the people who understand them.
Lessons learned
- Product ownership beats task completion—the best features come from engineers who sat in the problem.
- Testing culture is a velocity feature, not a tax.
- Mentorship compounds: one independent engineer is worth more than a quarter of shipped tickets.
